The Houston Rockets let a double-digit third quarter lead slip away Friday night, falling to the Portland Trailblazers 117-115 in overtime at the Rose Garden. Houston stretched a halftime lead to 15 points midway through the third before Portland climbed back into the game.
James Harden continued his torrid start to the season, scoring 29 points to lead the Rockets. The problem for Houston was their defense, especially in the second half. Nicolas Batum scored 35 points, pulled down six rebounds and had five blocks for Portland, while LaMarcus Aldridge added 29 points and rookie point guard Damian Lillard scored 27.
There are no undefeated teams left in NBA after the Memphis Grizzlies defeated the New York Knicks 105-95. The Grizzlies got a balanced attack from their starters, with Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol, Rudy Gay and Mike Conley Jr. all scoring 16 or more points. Gasol led the offensive attack, scoring 24 points, while Randolph recorded his eighth double-double in as many games, scoring 20 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. The Grizzlies now lead the Western Conference by one game over the San Antonio Spurs, who lost to the Knicks Thursday night.
The Dallas Mavericks road woes continued, as they fell to the Indiana Pacers Friday, 103-83. The Mavs are now 1-4 on the road. Dallas shot 37 percent from the field and just 15 percent from three-point range. The lone bright spot was the continued excellent play of O.J. Mayo. Mayo had 19 points to lead the Mavs, but no other player scored over ten points.
The New Orleans Hornets were outscored by 18 points in the first quarter against the Oklahoma City Thunder and never recovered, losing 110-95. Ryan Anderson scored 19 points in 21 minutes off the bench for the Hornets, while rookie Anthony Davis chipped in eight points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Kevin Durant and Kevin Martin each had 27 points to lead the Thunder.
