First woman in space: Miserable cosmonaut or triumphant space flyer?

Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, flew 50 years ago today. After her problem-plagued flight, it took almost two decades for another woman to go into space.

Valentina Tereshkova, who flew into space 50 years ago today, was confronted with this terrifying possibility on the first day of her problem-plagued spaceflight.

The first woman in space, Ms. Tereshkova was seen by many as a triumph for the Soviet space program, but is remembered by some colleagues as a token female who botched her flight.

"She didn't want to go," Soviet space scientists told me during my own years as a NASA-funded researcher. "She was so hysterical that she threw up in space," they said. ?"At the last minute, she panicked, and they had to strap her into her seat against her will."

While her nausea was documented ? she did indeed vomit in space, and spent most of her three-day trip sitting as still as possible ? space nausea is a common enough problem that NASA has designed a?high-tech solution, while "hysteria" is a dismissive label applied almost exclusively to women.

She actually solved the first big problem in her flight: On the first day, the ship's autopilot mistakenly steered her away from Earth, leaving her facing the prospect of being lost in space.

"It was programmed to raise the orbit," she?told reporters. "I put the new data in and it worked fine."

During re-entry, also on autopilot, there was no communication between her ship and the ground, and she ended up landing in an unexpected place. She said there had been a communications equipment failure, but the team on the ground blamed her for going silent.

Tereshkova's role in the flight's problems may never be completely known. The Soviets certainly had engineering challenges with their rockets, including one which led to the only three deaths in space. (Both the Challenger and Columbia disasters happened inside Earth's atmosphere, thus not technically "in space.")

Memoirs from other members of the Soviet space team have blamed Tereshkova for her problematic mission, but the idea that she was forced against her will seems unlikely to be true. If the avid skydiver had changed her mind at the last minute, she could easily have stepped aside in favor of one of the other four female cosmonauts who had shared her 7 months of rigorous training.

The Nets hired Jason Kidd as their coach Wednesday, bringing the former star back to the franchise he led to its greatest NBA success.

Kidd retired earlier this month after one season with the Knicks, his 19th in the NBA. The Nets decided to hire him to replace P.J. Carlesimo despite his absence of coaching experience.

"Jason Kidd has a long and legendary history with the Nets and with the city of New York," Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov said in a statement. "He has the fire in the belly we need, and has achieved as a player everything the Brooklyn Nets are striving to achieve. We believe he will lead us there. Welcome home, Jason."

The move reunites Kidd with the franchise he led to consecutive NBA Finals in 2002-03, when they played in New Jersey. He spent 6? seasons with the Nets, averaging 14.6 points, 9.1 assists and 7.2 rebounds, and is their career leader in numerous statistical categories.

"Jason is a proven winner and leader with an incredible wealth of basketball knowledge and experience," general manager Billy King said. "This will be a natural transition for him to move into the role of head coach, as he embodies the tough, smart and team-first mentality that we are trying to establish in Brooklyn."

Terms of the deal that made Kidd the 18th coach in franchise history were not disclosed. The Nets will introduce Kidd on Thursday during a press conference at Barclays Center.

Carlesimo wasn't retained after leading the Nets into the playoffs, where they lost to the Chicago Bulls in the first round. He went 35-19 after replacing Avery Johnson, who was fired in December.

Kidd, 40, was considered one of the smartest players in the NBA, which he believes will help him make the transition into coaching.

"This is a tremendous opportunity to be named head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, and it's a role I have been studying for over the course of my playing days," Kidd said. "Championship teams are built on being prepared, playing unselfishly and being held accountable, and that's how I expect to coach this basketball team."

The Nets interviewed him this week and chose him as their coach after talking with Indiana Pacers assistant Brian Shaw earlier Wednesday.

Kidd has a close friendship with Nets point guard Deron Williams and the respect of many in the organization for his achievements as a player. He is second on the NBA's career list in assists and steals, won an NBA title with Dallas and has two Olympic gold medals.

Press release: Poorer outcomes for oesophageal and gastric cancer linked to ?huge variation? in endoscopy referral rates between GP practices

Patients from GP practices with low endoscopy referral rates are at increased risk of poor outcomes from oesophageal and gastric cancers according to research presented at Public Health England?s National Cancer Intelligence Network annual conference.

Research from the Department of Gastoenterology at the University of Liverpool has found that there is a wide variation in rates of elective upper gastrointestinal endoscopy between GP practices across England.

The team studied 22,488 new cases of oesophageal and gastric cancer from 6,513 general practices. Their research showed that average referral rates for endoscopy varied by 250%.

Patients belonging to practices with low rates of endoscopy referral were shown to be at increased risk of a poor outcome as reflected in higher rates of emergency admission for diagnosis, lower rates of potentially curative surgery and poorer one year survival rates. This inequality was most marked in practices serving deprived populations where those in the low referring group had the poorest cancer outcomes in the country.

Dr Keith Bodger, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool, said:

Sadly, most tumours of the oesophagus or stomach are incurable by the time of diagnosis in the UK. Early symptoms may be mild or indistinguishable from the common benign causes of indigestion. Current NICE guidelines advise a conservative approach to investigating stomach symptoms, reserving gastroscopy for older patients or those with established ?red flag? or ?alarm? symptoms.

Our research shows that general practices in England vary substantially in their rates of gastroscopy and that low rates are associated with a risk of poorer outcomes for oesophageal and gastric cancer. This inequality is worst for those living in the most deprived areas of the country. Targeted interventions may be required for local populations having inappropriately low rates of investigation.

Dr Mick Peake Clinical Lead at Public Health England?s National Cancer Intelligence Network, said:

Rates of referral for endoscopy from primary care show wide variation suggesting a spectrum of clinical practice and differing interpretation of guidelines.

Whereas outcomes for many cancers have improved over the last decade, progress has been limited for tumours of the oesophagus and stomach and early stage diagnosis remains challenging. The research has highlighted not only significant differences but also inequalities. GP practices with low rates of endoscopy referral should review their current practice, particularly those serving deprived populations. Patients wherever they live should be given the best possible chance of a successful outcome. Increasing endoscopy rates and ensuring the right patients are referred early, would be likely to significantly improve the outcomes for patients with oesophageal and stomach cancers.

  • A endoscopy (also known as a gastroscopy) is a medical procedure during which a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope is used to look inside the stomach. The endoscope has a light and a camera on one end. The camera is used to relay images of the inside of the body to a television monitor. More than half a million endoscopies are performed by the NHS each year in England.
  • One year survival rates for cancer of the oesophagus is approximately 40%, and five year survival is around 13%.
  • One year survival rates for gastric cancer is approximately 40%, and five year survival is around 17%.

US Supreme Court: Human Genetic Material Can't Be Patented

Big news from the east side of Capitol Hill: It's not okay to patent genetic material taken from the human body. Or at least, it's not okay in the eyes of the nation's highest court. SCOTUS took on the controversial and somewhat futuristic case earlier this year, and with all the torrid discussion about updating all patent laws, everyone knew that this decision would be a landmark one.

It wasn't a tough one for the Supreme Court, though. In deciding on a case focused on Myriad Genetics, a company that built its empire by isolating and patenting two genes that indicate a higher risk of breast cancer, all nine judges voted against allowing human genes to be patented. Synthetically produced genes, however, are totally up for grabs and can continue to enjoy the legal protection of our nation's patent laws. Just don't expect Uncle Sam to swing his intellectual property rights sword to defend your Frankenstein, though. That's just wrong. [Reuters]

(AP) ? The top prosecutors in San Francisco and New York planned Thursday to announce the formation of a nationwide initiative and coalition of police, prosecutors and other officials in an attempt to thwart a surge in smartphone thefts.

Officials said San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman were set to launch what they call the Secure Our Smartphones Initiative at a New York news conference on Thursday.

The coalition includes prosecutors, police and political officials and consumer advocates from more than a dozen states and intends to put pressure on smartphone companies and their shareholders to help dry up the secondary market in stolen phones.

The announcement comes on the same day Gascon and Schneiderman are scheduled to co-host a "Smartphone Summit" with representatives from major smartphone makers Apple Inc., Samsung Electronics Co., Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

Among the moves the prosecutors seek is the industry-wide introduction of a "kill switch" that would render stolen phones worthless.

Apple said at a conference of web developers this week that such a feature would be part of its iOS7 smartphone software to be released in the fall. Gascon and Schneiderman said in a statement they were "appreciative of the gesture" but would reserve judgment until they could "understand its actual functionality."

Almost 1 in 3 robberies nationwide involves the theft of a mobile phone, according to the Federal Communications Commission.

"The epidemic of violent street crime involving the theft and resale of mobile devices is a very real and growing threat in communities all across America," Schneiderman said in a statement. "According to reports, roughly 113 smartphones are stolen or lost each minute in the United states, with too many of those thefts turning violent."

In New York, police have coined the term "Apple-picking" to describe thefts of the popular iPhone and other mobile products like iPads.
