Sushi for peccaries?

Apr. 29, 2013 ? It turns out the white-lipped peccary -- a piglike animal from Central and South America -- will settle for fish when fruits (its main food) are no longer on the menu, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society and partners revealing the first-ever photos of fish-eating peccaries.

The images of fish consumption by white-lipped peccaries were taken by Douglas Fernandes in the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands one morning back in 2011. A short description of the observations, along with the digital photographs taken, will appear in the latest edition of Suiform Soundings (IUCN Peccary Specialist Group Newsletter).

"As far as we know, these are the first images of fish consumption by white-lipped peccaries," said Dr. Alexine Keuroghlian of the Wildlife Conservation Society and an expert on peccaries. "This finding expands our knowledge of how this ecologically important species survives in highly seasonal habitats."

While there was one reported account by Dr. Joe Fragoso of the white-lipped peccary dining on fish in the Amazon, the behavior has been rarely seen and apparently never photographed until the morning of August 17, 2011. On that day, Fernandes, a researcher for the Instituto Arara Azul, a partner organization , observed a group of approximately 30 white-lipped peccaries at Caiman Lodge near the town of Miranda in the Pantanal, one of the world's largest tropical wetlands. Most of the peccaries fled as he approached, but five remained as they fed on aquatic plants in shallow ponds, created by the receding flood waters typical of the Pantanal's dry season. It was then that Fernandes noticed three of the peccaries eating traira, or wolf fish, from the oxygen-starved ponds.

"We know that peccaries are primarily fruit-eaters, but will consume aquatic plants, tubers, grasses, and small invertebrates, such as insect larvae, worms, and snails, when fruits are scarce," said Dr. Keuroghlian.

"At the time, I knew this was a rare observation but was unaware of the fact that I was taking perhaps the first images of this behavior," said Fernandes.

The white-lipped peccary is a medium-sized animal that occurs in both humid tropical forests as well as open savanna and wetland habitats throughout Central and South America. The species sometimes travels in herds of hundreds of individual animals, the only Neotropical ungulate (hoofed mammal) known to do so. As a major fruit-eater, the white-lipped peccary plays an important ecological role in rainforests and other habitats as a seed predator and disperser, and it is a favorite prey of jaguars and pumas. Additionally, white-lipped peccaries are considered an environmental indicator of a well-preserved forest.

The white-lipped peccary is listed as "Near Threatened"on the IUCN's Red List, but its status is currently under review as "Vulnerable." The two main threats faced by white-lipped peccaries are habitat loss and direct hunting.

JPMorgan co-COO Bisignano leaves to run First Data

NEW YORK (AP) ? JPMorgan Chase & Co. said Sunday that one of its co-chief operating officers is leaving the company, marking the latest high-profile departure since the bank's massive trading loss last year.

Frank Bisignano will become CEO of payment processor First Data Corp. on Monday. Matt Zames, who was co-chief operating officer with Bisignano, will become the sole COO of JPMorgan Chase effective immediately.

First Data said Bisignano, 53, succeeds Ed Labry, who has been interim CEO and president of Retail and Alliance Services since Jan. 28. Labry will continue as president of Retail and Alliance Services.

Bisignano and Zames were named co-chief operating officers in a management reshuffle in July after JPMorgan Chase revealed a trading loss of about $6 billion. The massive loss became a focus of the risky bets taken at large banks and oversight of traders who make those bets. It also prompted congressional hearings, as well as investigations by international regulators.

Others called for the resignation of CEO Jamie Dimon, who initially called the trade a "tempest in a teapot." Dimon later backtracked and apologized several times for the mischaracterization after the scope of the loss was revealed.

The Wall Street Journal first reported that Bisignano would be the ninth executive in the past year and a half to leave Dimon's operating committee of key decision makers.

Dimon and Bisignano have known each other since the 1980s, according to the Journal, and worked together at Citibank.

Before he was named co-chief operating officer this summer, Zames had taken over as chief investment officer for Ina Drew, who resigned in the days after the big trading loss was revealed.

JPMorgan also said Sunday that Paul Compton will become chief administrative officer. He is currently co-chief administrative officer of the Corporate & Investment Bank and deputy head of operations for JPMorgan Chase.

Louis Rauchenberger, who shares Compton's current role, will become sole chief administrative officer of the Corporate and Investment Bank.

Mac OS X 10.9 Details - Business Insider

Apple is preparing a new version of its operating system for Mac computers called OS X 10.9 that will bring in several features from iOS, the operating system for iPhones and iPads.

Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac, who is consistently accurate with reports on upcoming Apple products, has a few details on what we can expect:

  • The Finder, which lets you explore files and folders on your Mac, will have a new tabbed browsing mode, just like on your Web browser.
  • Switching between open apps will be a similar to the iPhone and iPad method: you'll be able to select an app from a tray at the bottom of your screen. This will also help improve performance and battery life by "suspending" the apps when you're not using them.
  • There might be some other interface changes, but they won't be anything drastic.

Apple will likely unveil OS X 10.9 at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10.

Check out Gurman's report for even more details >

My EFT Tapping for Anxiety Relief Video: Emotional Freedom ...

Have you heard of Emotional Freedom Technique? EFT is a scientifically proven way to rewire your brain and interrupt anxiety, panic attacks, fear, social anxiety, phobias, compulsive behaviors, stress and trauma in many people. The Energy Tapping script that I created around the issue is below??

G

reetings Friends,

?

As long as we?re breathing, there is stress.?Our brains go into fight, freeze or flight mode, ready to rumble with the tigers in the jungle. Because most of us are not battling tigers, the fear and anxiety that can send our bodies into overdrive does not always have a helpful purpose.

The great thing is that we?re getting more comfortable with conversations around coping with stress and anxiety. This is particularly important as both women and men are focused on giving the picture of perfection. We put on our Glamouflage to distract from the fact that we?re terrified and inside folks are stressed, depressed and well-dressed ? drinking, drugging, sexing, under-nourishing and over-working ourselves to distract and numb from what we?re really feeling.

EFT is one methodology that works for me.?

  • Whether you are dealing with relationship drama, money stress, career anxiety or mild depression, this acupressure technique may be helpful and healing for you. The great thing is that you don?t even need a practitioner. You can do EFT Tapping yourself.?If you can?t see my EFT for Anxiety video, click here.

EFT, also known as Emotional Freedom Technique is one technology that can be incredibly helpful in maintaining a healthy state of mind. Tapping has been helpful for me for a myriad of issues including emotional eating. Journaling has also been very healing for me personally in dealing with anxiety.

If you?re looking to learn more about acupressure and this EFT Tapping energy healing technique, Nick Ortner?s new book, ?The Tapping Solution: A Revolutionary System for Stress-Free Living?? is unparalleled. This textbook on healing from Hay House explores the science behind this life-changing mode that has been proven to help with trauma and all kinds of issues from compulsive eating to depression. Of course, check with your own healthcare provider to find solutions that work for you. I recommend the book both as a love and life coach and as someone finds tapping powerful in her personal healing arsenal.

Key Egyptian negotiator with IMF quits

CAIRO (Reuters) - A key Egyptian negotiator with the International Monetary Fund said on Sunday he has resigned as first deputy finance minister, in a potential blow to Cairo's prospects of an early IMF deal.

Hany Kadry Dimian has been the crucial point man in Egypt's protracted and so far fruitless negotiations to obtain a $4.8 billion loan needed to help combat a severe economic crisis.

"The only comment I can make for the time being is that yes, my term ends on April 30 according to my resignation, which I submitted in December," Kadry told Reuters by telephone.

"My next move is not decided."

A senior technocrat appointed in 2007, Kadry survived five finance ministers in office since the 2011 uprising that overthrew former autocratic President Hosni Mubarak.

Kadry gave no explanation for his decision to quit, first reported on the Egyptian dissident Rebel Economy blog, saying he would say more on Tuesday.

A senior European diplomat said his departure was not a good omen for Egypt's hopes of wrapping up a deal on the long delayed IMF loan next month, as the government has said it aims to do.

Kadry was the one expert in the ministry who fully understood the IMF program and was able to deal with the global lender professionally, the diplomat said.

The daily El-Watan said on its website that Kadry had been under increasing pressure from the ruling Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, and in conflict with Abdallah Shehata, the FJP economic adviser to Finance Minister Al-Mursi Al-Sayed Hegazy.

Separately, the head of Egypt's bourse, Mohamed Omran, told Prime Minister Hisham Kandil he would like to leave his position at the end of his term on July 1, the state news agency MENA reported, citing an unnamed official stock exchange source.

The report did not give a reason for Omran's request, but said he had told the prime minister in August he wanted to leave the post. Kandil had asked him to stay until the end of his term, MENA said.

Lawmakers cancel FAA furloughs, flee Washington ? by air

Air travelers breathed a sigh of relief after Congress passed quick legislation allowing the FAA to cancel furloughs for air traffic controllers. But that's just increased partisan sniping over the sequester and its across-the-board budget cuts.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / April 27, 2013

A passenger waits for his flight at Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta Friday. Congress approved legislation ending furloughs of air traffic controllers that have delayed hundreds of flights daily, infuriating travelers and causing political headaches for lawmakers. The FAA says things should be back to normal by Sunday evening.

David Goldman/AP

On behalf of steaming-mad air travelers ? some forced to wait hours or have their flights canceled ? Congress gave the Federal Aviation Administration special dispensation to call furloughed air traffic controllers back to work.

Then most of them scooted out of town for a week?s vacation, heading for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (known to Democrats as ?Washington National?) or to Dulles International.

On Saturday came good travel news for all air travelers, no matter their political affiliation, the FAA announcing simply:

?The FAA has suspended all employee furloughs. Air traffic facilities will begin to return to regular staffing levels over the next 24 hours and the system will resume normal operations by Sunday evening.?

(Which came as particularly good news to Decoder, who?s scheduled to fly cross-country and back ? six flights in all ? this coming week.)

But none of those now-absent members of House and Senate should expect to receive much constituent praise for having over-ruled themselves on behalf of the FAA. It took breaking part of the ?sequester? scheme for across-the-board budget cuts, designed to force themselves (and the Obama administration) to come to agreement on government spending and the deficit.

Who?s to blame? The other guy, of course.

In his radio address Saturday, President Obama had this to say:

?It was a bad idea then.?And as the country saw this week, it?s a bad idea now?.?

Republicans fired back.

"There are some in the Obama administration who thought inflicting pain on the public would give the president more leverage to avoid making necessary spending cuts, and to impose more tax hikes on the American people,'' said Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania, chairman of the House transportation committee, in the GOP address. ?This episode is yet another demonstration of why we need to replace the president?s sequester with smarter, more responsible cuts.?

?The president?s sequester? ? that was part of the budget deal agreed to by the Republican-controlled House, of which House Speaker John Boehner (R) said, ?I got 98 percent of what I wanted.?

[Spar or fight] Realistic Melee

I haven't done a roleplay fight in a very long time and would like to try it again. I would like a melee fight with realistic human or humanlike characters.

Any weapon type from any culture is okay as long as it's reasonable and realistic. I will be using a katana for this fight.

Easton Bazzoli Dunk Shatters Backboard (VIDEO)

After Easton Bazzoli of Seneca Valley High School (Pa.) threw down a two-handed dunk during the Roundball Classic at Geneva College on Saturday night, the PA announcer said, "Well ladies and gentlemen, I think that about does it."

Why? Because Bazzoli pulled down the rim, shattering the backboard.

According to Mike White of post-gazette.com, the dunk occurred with a minute left in regulation and the refs stopped the game entirely.

On Tuesday, Bazzoli hinted that the dunk might be getting some more attention.

These Guys Are Selling Their Private Photo-Sharing App Divvy From The Back Of A VW Bus

divvybusBootstrapping founders, Jeremy Greenfield and Keyvon Olomi, have taken a non-traditional route to marketing their new photo aggregation and sharing application, Divvy. They’ve hopped into a 1973 VW camper bus and are on a cross-country road trip to tour colleges around the U.S., in an attempt to get the word out about the privacy options their app allows. They left April 1st from Tulsa, and are now in the New York tri-state area, with plans to hit up Boston, MIT, Harvard, and more, before heading to Denver in three weeks. Olomi, who’s also the founder of app development marketplace AppTank, says he built Divvy to scratch a few of his own itches: the hassles of moving between Facebook and Instagram to follow his friends’ photos, the?inability?to zoom in on Instagram photos, and the inability to save those photos. But he also thinks that more private photo sharing is something today’s younger users want. A desire for more private socializing has of course fueled the rise of messaging apps and new twists on photo-sharing, as with the “disposable” photo and video sharing on Shapchat, for example. But penetrating the space as a newcomer is always tough. That’s why Divvy starts off by selling itself as a photo aggregator first and foremost. Today, the app pulls in the feeds from Facebook and Instagram, with plans to support Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, and Dropbox in the future. You can not only view your friends photos, but also like and comment on them using Divvy. This isn’t an entirely novel concept, since many apps and services have offered the combined albums experience, including Dropbox acquisition Snapjoy, Shutterfly acquisition ThisLife, Picturelife, Woven, Everpix, and even those not focused only on photos, like Flipboard, for example. What Divvy does differently is add its own photo-sharing features to the mix. Like a mini-social network of its own, friends can share photos to all their followers on Divvy, share selectively with individuals or groups, or share with nearby Divvy users – even if they don’t have their contact information. The nearby photo thing has been tried before too – with Color, most notably – but also with more under the radar options like Evertale’s Wink.?It’s a use case that doesn’t quite seem capable of supporting a standalone application of its own, so it makes sense for Divvy to sideline this as an option, not as the key feature. The individuals charged with educating Guerrero's children, and helping build a brighter future for a country lauded for its economic promise, have been on strike since a federal education reform bill was introduced almost two months ago.

The bill is part of a wider reform agenda by President?Enrique Pe?a Nieto which aims to feed economic opportunity and growth in Mexico. Other initiatives discussed include boosting competition in the telecommunications industry and increasing bank lending rates.

But in yet another sign that President Enrique Pe?a Nieto is facing pushback on his ambitious reform plan, this week scores of educators took to the streets armed with sticks and spray paint. They broke windows, threw papers and plants out of buildings, vandalized furniture and office equipment, and set fire to political offices, according to Mexican news outlets.

?Teach and learn ? vandalism,? read today?s front page of Mexican newspaper Reforma, with photos splashed above the fold showing a political party office in Guerrero?engulfed in flames, and a highway road block using a ?kidnapped? 18-wheeler from state-owned oil company PEMEX in the neighboring state Michoac?n, which is also experiencing teacher protests.

Earlier this year President Pe?a Nieto passed far-reaching education reform that aims to diminish the tight grasp of Mexico?s powerful teachers union and reverse common practices like teachers receiving pay despite not showing up to work. According to The Christian Science Monitor:

The reform strips the education union ??arguably the most powerful in Latin America ??of its influence over the hiring of teachers. It provides for a system of merit-based pay and promotions, subjects Mexico?s estimated 1 million teachers to evaluations, and requires exams of those entering the profession. All with greater oversight by the federal government.

In Guerrero state, educators upped protests after state legislators failed to incorporate the 200,000-member education union?s demands to water down the federal legislation at the state level on Tuesday.

The mayor of Chilpancingo, where the vandalism took place yesterday afternoon, told Mexican newspaper Milenio that he?s requested federal assistance. The governor of Guerrero announced via Twitter that arrest warrants had been issued for the head of the state Education Workers Union, Minervino Moran, and another union leader, for ?masterminding? the destruction of property, reports the Associated Press.

Guerrero, home of the well-known beach destination Acapulco, has repeatedly made headlines this year for violence and the uptick in vigilante militias and self-defense groups.
