Facebook Social Graph Search

?

Facebook Open Graph Search | Kinetic KnowledgeWhat Is a ?Social Graph??

? The social graph in terms of the Internet has been referred to as ?global mapping of everybody and how they are related.? Better yet it?s a giant graph meant to
demonstrate the personal relationships of Internet users ? and Facebook wants to exploit it.

What Is ?Social Graph Search??

? You thought you were just sharing a few laughs with friends??Social graph search is search & search results based upon what your friends like or do. Facebook wants to expose all the personal information it has, currently the largest social database in the world, for their new pillar application ?Social Graph Search?.

How Will It Be Used?

? It?s going to be search, but the results will be related to friend activity. Don?t get too excited yet, Social Graph Search is in beta testing and only available to a select few Facebookers? right now. They say they have a long way to go with it, but as it?s rolled out early focus will be on people, photos, places and business pages. For individuals it might mean being able to search ?what friends like to snowboard??maybe to find a travel mate for that vacation time coming due.?For a business, say a Ski Resort, it might mean coming up in the results when individuals search and their friends have liked it. For instance, maybe ?what resorts do friends like to snowboard?.?

Is It Important To Business?

? All marketers are going to want to be visible in an environment where lots people search, especially if we can be on the positive end of people?s thoughts and activity. So while not a huge thing so far and certainly not a part of Facebook?s standard search yet, it?s likely to going to be very important. Maybe one day as important as the the consumer visibility we all seek in Google now.

What Should Business People Do?

?With Facebook Business pages, we want to keep gathering those likes. We want to be active posting specials, new products, blog posts and valuable comments by engagement and the number of fans is likely going to matter. You want to be sure you?ve been thorough in detailing your profile including addresses for local businesses, so go back in to the About page and check your detail. For the local business Facebook?s Social Graph Search may even become more relevant than some of the big review directory sites, so be sure to jump in? and we?ll keep you informed as this evolves.

Is Outsourcing Order Fulfillment Right for You? | Independent Retailer

outsourcing order fulfillmentWhen it comes to outsourcing order fulfillment, independent retailers must determine on an individual basis what form of order fulfillment best suits their business needs. If you choose to work with a fulfillment house, it should be intimately familiar with your business to serve you properly. Bob Boylan, president of xpertfulfillment.com, explains: ?A good fulfillment company is going to take care of everything for you. They will think of every contingency in advance, and know your business as well as you do. They will nip any problems in the bud before they get out of hand. You are allowing them to work on their strengths so you can focus on yours.? Conversely, as with any service provider, if they aren?t up to par, a retailer?s business will be negatively impacted. Regardless of the type of fulfillment provider you choose, a number of common issues exist, including relinquishing control of a part of your business.

Ecommerce Fulfillment

The issue of volume is directly related to general ecommerce fulfillment. If you have a warehouse full of products and a small staff, you might want to outsource this aspect of your business, including the organization of the warehouse, putting away and recording stock. Then when an order comes in, the product is retrieved, packed and sent off. Depending on the product, the fulfillment house should know whether to use bubble-wrap, dry ice, foam, ice pack or shrink-wrap. Eco-friendly packaging should be used, when possible. The fulfillment house should ship orders to ensure they arrive to the correct location in a timely fashion, and via express or next day delivery, if the customer desires. As business grows and sales increase, if retailers outsource order fulfillment, they won?t have to hire more staff, which means labor and training costs won?t bubble out of control.

One disadvantage is of ecommerce fulfillment is that the customer will blame your business, and not the fulfillment company, for any mistakes in his or her order. As Boylan notes, the expertise and knowledge of the fulfillment company makes a big difference. ?A good ecommerce fulfillment company will facilitate high growth as opposed to impeding it. You can take advantage of their resources, expertise and technology. When it works well, you get peace of mind, and when it doesn?t, you feel a loss of control.? In addition, if something happens to the fulfillment house, it could impact your business.

Mail Order Fulfillment

Mail order fulfillment is for a business that requires enveloping, wrapping and mail sorting. It may not be necessary for a small operation, but if you have numerous employees and there is a copious amount of mail coming in and out of your business, you might prefer to outsource it. With email, scanning and faxing, the amount of mail may not be as much as it would have been years ago, but it can be high. There is no doubt that people are attached to mail?if they send something out, they want to make sure it arrives quickly, and if they are waiting for something, they want it to come as soon as possible. When it comes to mail order fulfillment, the issue is whether you have the volume of mail to justify it,? Boylan points out. If you do, providers often apply discounts.

Print Fulfillment

Print fulfillment pertains to everything regarding written material be it catalogs, brochures, postcards, presentation folders, binders or sales packets. ?This is time consuming and labor intensive, which is why people like to outsource it,? Boylan remarks. This includes creating, collating, storing and shipping printed materials.

Regardless of whether you are selling footwear or furniture, do your homework when considering outsourcing order fulfillment processes. When it comes to costs, make sure you understand the details. Protect yourself from any mistakes the fulfillment house might make by addressing problem resolutions in your contract. The decision whether or not to outsource order fulfillment is based on what makes the best business sense for your firm. If you decide outsourcing fulfillment is right for you, find a recommended and trusted supplier that understands your business needs.

Senate chair: Count up Hagel vote after hearing

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committees says it's best to wait until after Chuck Hagel's confirmation hearing before figuring out the votes for President Barack Obama's nominee for defense secretary.

Democratic Sen. Carl Levin, who backs Hagel's nomination, said Tuesday it was too early to count the votes. Hagel's confirmation hearing is Jan. 31. Obama tapped the former Republican senator to replace Leon Panetta, but the choice has faced strong GOP opposition.

Hagel was scheduled to meet with Republican Sen. John McCain on Tuesday. McCain has praised Hagel's Vietnam War service, but said he has serious questions.

Democrats have started to rally around Hagel, with Sens. Chuck Schumer and Barbara Boxer announcing their support last week. Levin said it was possible that Hagel gets some GOP votes.

What Will Obama Do to Tackle Climate Change?

President Obama vowed in his inaugural speech Monday to respond to what he called the "threat of climate change," saying, "failure to do so would betray our children and future generations."

Pressed on what the president plans to do to take on climate change, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney declined to offer specifics:

JONATHAN KARL/ABC NEWS: On climate change, can you help me understand specifically what the president wants to pursue in a second term on this? Does he have legislation he would like to see Congress pass? Are we back to cap and trade? What, specifically, does he want to do that he didn't do in the first term?

JAY CARNEY/WHITE HOUSE: Well, I think the president has long supported congressional action on climate change. And while it's clear that bipartisan opposition to legislative action is still a reality, the president's position remains the same as it was in the first term. He looks forward to building on the achievements made in the first term, and he looks at this in a broad way because this isn't deficit reduction, for example, is not a goal unto itself. We pursue it in a way that helps our economy grow and helps it create jobs. Otherwise, it's not worth the effort, in his mind.

Climate change is not - you don't pursue action that helps deal with that problem just because of the problem itself, but because there are huge opportunities in alternative energy.

Whether anyone in Washington or elsewhere likes it or not, clean energy technology is going to be a huge part of the 21st century global economy. We can make choices now that ensure that those industries are domestic, that we dominate those fields of endeavor and we create the jobs associated with those industries here in America, or we can substitute our dependence on foreign oil for a dependence on imports of clean energy technology.

The president believes that would be short-sighted. So, you know, he looks at this in a more holistic way ? and he will move forward in implementing some of the actions that he took in the first term and build on the progress that was made in the first term.

KARL: He dedicated more of that speech to climate change than any other specific policy area.

CARNEY: I would - I would encourage everyone who looks at the speech not to break it apart because we view the inaugural address - the president views the inaugural address and the speech he will give to Congress on Feb. 12- the State of the Union address - as part of a package - as two parts of a package. And that has been tradition. ? Inaugural addresses tend to be about the president's vision - that certainly was the case yesterday - about how we move forward together as a country.

The policy specifics and - I think for those who do this in Washington, like number of words dedicated to each issue and which position they achieve in the address, I would probably discourage you from doing that after he gives the State of the Union, but it's more appropriate for an address like that.

KARL: But why did it have such a prominent focus in this speech and such a relative narrow focus, if any, in the campaign?

CARNEY: I contest that assertion, because in fact ? he raised the challenge of climate change frequently in the campaign. He talked about it in press conferences, in recent press conferences, as well as when asked about it. He addressed fully his commitment to dealing with this challenge and the impact it has our economy and our people.

So you know, it's an important issue. It's a priority. But there - it is not a singular priority; it is one of a host of priorities that he believes we can act on if we work together.

KARL: Did he run a single ad during the entire campaign that invoked climate change?

CARNEY: You know, I would refer you to the ad makers. I decided early on in that process not to view every ad that was broadcast, because who would have the time? So I can't remember, but it was certainly an issue that he talked about frequently on the campaign trail, and you know, it's one that he believes is a priority.

Conservative Republicans Losing Steam on Default Dare

House Republican leadership appears to have quieted naysayers on their right who recently seemed hungry to threaten default and defy conventional arguments that such a hardline stance would trigger crisis.

As the House prepares to take steps to push back the debt ceiling deadline until May, the debate within the party is still focused on how to achieve the GOP?s desired spending cuts using other less credit-threatening vehicles, such as the sequester or the soon-to-expire continuing resolution to fund the government.

Even a Ways and Means Committee hearing on the history and mechanics of the debt ceiling -- which some had viewed last week as a platform to spread the message that refusing to raise the nation?s borrowing limit would not result in a devastating default -- seemed to be evaporating even before the hearing began.

?I?m not sure how widely that view is held,? said Lee Casey, a partner, with Baker Hostetler, who is a leading voice arguing that the White House and Democrats? arguments about the risks of default are bogus. He co-wrote a recent piece in the Wall Street Journal, arguing about the ?myth of government default? and argues the framers of the Constitution intended the debt ceiling to be used as a ?weapon.?

?There are more who probably would prefer to see some form of a compromise that would raise the debt ceiling?. I don?t have a sense if there is a large number of people out there -- especially in Congress -- who would like to not raise it and test the theory.?

Republican aides said a major focus of last week?s retreat was on defusing interest in using the debt ceiling as a weapon to achieve spending cuts, arguing it could be dangerous to the economy and backfire on Republicans.

?Republicans very well understand that crisis we went through from not raising the debt ceiling and that was explained at Williamsburg,? said a GOP aide.

Other budget wonks watching deliberations behind the scenes on Capitol Hill agree the arguments that default would not be disastrous seem to be waning, particularly at the behest of leaders and ?old bulls? in the party.

?There is growing recognition that not raising the debt ceiling would have an impact that would be very difficult for the economy,? said G. William Hoagland, a senior vice president with the Bipartisan Policy Center. ?The discussion that happened down at Williamsburg had a lot to do with that evolution. I?m thinking that Paul Ryan had a lot to do with the discussion down there -- that he recognizes that the statutory debt ceiling is not something that you want to play around with.?
